Winter Car Care: Preparing Your Vehicle for Cold Weather

Winter is coming, and it's time to make sure your vehicle is ready for the cold weather ahead. Here's your complete winter car care checklist.

Check Your Battery

Cold weather is hard on batteries. If your battery is more than 3 years old, have it tested. Many auto parts stores offer free testing.

Inspect Your Tires

Check tire pressure regularly – it drops in cold weather. Make sure your tread depth is adequate (at least 4/32 inch) for wet and icy conditions.

Top Off Fluids

Check antifreeze levels and make sure your windshield washer fluid is rated for freezing temperatures. Consider switching to winter-grade oil if you live in extremely cold areas.

Test Your Heater and Defroster

Make sure your heater works properly and your defroster clears the windshield effectively. Replace cabin air filters if needed.

Replace Wiper Blades

Old wiper blades can streak and reduce visibility. Consider winter wiper blades designed to prevent ice buildup.

Pack an Emergency Kit

Keep blankets, a flashlight, jumper cables, ice scraper, emergency flares, and basic tools in your trunk. Add some non-perishable snacks and water too.
